Fieldpiece refrigerant gauge diagnostics on outdoor air conditioner

AC Running but Not Cooling? A Real Diagnostic Example from the Field

When an air conditioner runs but the rooms stay warm, the problem is not always a failed compressor or a simple need for more refrigerant. Cool Neighbor Appliance & AC Repair uses temperature measurements and system checks to narrow down the cause before recommending repairs.

A real cooling-performance diagnostic example

During a residential split-system service assessment, the return-air temperature was approximately 84°F while supply air was around 70°F. That is a temperature difference of about 14°F. Refrigerant pressure readings were also taken. These measurements are useful starting points, but they are not enough by themselves to establish whether the system is low on refrigerant or needs a particular part.

What technicians check next

  • Airflow: filter condition, indoor coil cleanliness, blower operation and blocked return or supply vents.
  • Operating conditions: thermostat settings, outdoor temperature and whether the system has run long enough to stabilize.
  • Refrigeration performance: line temperatures, superheat and subcooling when appropriate, alongside equipment specifications.
  • Components: signs of a metering-device problem, restriction or other fault, with additional testing before recommending a repair.

A single pressure reading or temperature split does not prove a refrigerant leak, a failed expansion valve or a bad compressor. An accurate diagnosis helps avoid unnecessary refrigerant additions and part replacements.
